This seminar is created for those interested in learning about the technical side of Radio and Television Broadcasting.  While it is designed for new engineers it is also a great “refresher” course for seasoned technical people and will cover the latest technologies.

The subjects to be covered include the following:

History of Radio and Television broadcasting.  How it started and how we got to where we are today.

Overview of basic electronic theory.  It is important to have a basic knowledge of how electricity works to better understand the equipment in a broadcast operation.

All about audio, both analog and digital.  The key thing to remember, both in radio and television “It’s what comes out of the speaker that counts”.  Understanding how your listeners perceive audio is extremely important in that effort. Proper use of microphones, audio levels, and processors will be covered.

Philo Farnsworth made his first successful electronic television transmission on September 7, 1927.  We will look of how it worked and the advancements that have been made over the years from black and white to color, and now digital.

Understanding how the programming makes it way to your listening and viewing public.  Some people say it is magic, but the RF system to deliver the program over the air (OTA) is quite simple.  We will cover both radio and television transmitters and antennas.  Included in this part will be analog and digital radio broadcast (AM and FM), present television transmission standard ATSC 1.0 and the new ATSC 3.0.

A complete review of station operations, including FCC Rules and Regulations, EAS requirements, and good engineering practices.

The seminar is presented in a free-flowing form which enables questions and discussions throughout the presentation.  The presenter is Larry Wilkins, Director of the Alabama Broadcasters Association’s Engineering Academy. Wilkins is a fellow with the Society of Broadcast Engineers and serves on the National SBE Certification Committee.
